J-2 Visa

What is the J-2 Visa?

The J-2 Visa is a non-immigrant visa issued by a consular official at a U.S. embassy or consulate for spouses and dependents (unmarried children under the age of 21) of J-1 exchange visitors who accompany or later join the J-1 holder in the United States.

 

What is the AJ1 Fee for issuance of the DS-2019 to obtain the J-2?

The fee is $550 for the first family member and $300 for the second family member, plus insurance.  Insurance is based on the number of months ($50 per month).  Visa Denial Fee: $350 per visa.

 

J-2 Steps-Please submit all required documents to your AJ1 Program Manager.

  1. Current J-1 exchange visitor must have completed at minimum 90 days of program.

  2. Current J-1 exchange visitors obtains letter/statement from the host stating training program is in good standing and expects to continue successfully and they are aware J-1 exchange visitor is seeking a J-2 for (spouse and/or children) and they have no hesitation or objection in approving.

  3. Have your spouse complete an application at: AJ1 Apply

  4. Submit copy of J-2 passport and proof of spouse and/or children.

  5. Current J-1 exchange visitor must outline to AJ1 via written confirmation:

  • Financial ability to support the J-2

  • Suitable housing and transportation for J2 (provide details of housing, transportation, and cost).

  • Confirmation they understand the J-1 and J-2 Visa is a non-immigrant visa and that the program is not a way to obtain a permanent job in the U.S. or a way to immigrate.  J-1 must confirm they will not attempt a change of visa status while in the U.S. and agrees to return home at the conclusion of the program per J-1 regulations. 

 

Once this information is received and approved by AJ1, the J-2 applicant will be instructed to complete the AJ1 online application, upload passport, proof of eligibility, sign agreements and make payment for DS and insurance.

What privileges do I enjoy on a J-2 Visa?

A J-2 may enter the United States along with their J-1 spouse or parent or join the J-1 while participating in their exchange program in the United States.

 

What are the limitations of the J-2 Visa?

You are dependent upon the status of the J-1 holder and are only able to apply for a work permit after arriving in the

United States.

 

How long can I stay in the United States on a J-2 Visa?

You may remain in the United States as long as the J-1Visa holder has valid J-1 status.

 

Can J-2 visitor live or stay in host provided housing with the J-1 exchange visitor?

No, alternative accommodations will need to be secured for J-2 visitor.

Must I pay SEVIS?

No

 

Can I work on a J-2 Visa?

No, not unless a J-2 Visa holder obtains an Employment Authorization Document from the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.  AJ1 does not assist in this process. You may contact an immigration attorney of your choice or contact:
