ARRIVING IN THE U.S.

Prior to Arriving in the U.S.

  • Coordinate with your host property: Before purchasing your plane ticket, contact your host property to confirm arrival details.

  • Research the best airport: Check with your host property for recommendations on the best airport to fly into.

  • Arrive during the day: We suggest arriving during daytime hours for ease of travel.

  • Bring cash and payment methods: It is recommended to bring some cash for incidentals. Additionally, bring a debit or credit card that works in the U.S., as many stores accept digital payments like Google Pay, Apple Pay, Venmo, Zelle, and more.

  • Complete the American Journey arrival form: Once your host confirms your arrival (at least 7 days in advance), complete the arrival form on your AJ1 account. My AJ1 Account

What to Do Upon Arrival in the U.S.

  • Log into your My AJ1 Account: Within 24 hours of arrival, log into your account and validate your SEVIS by adding your U.S. address.

  • Immigration and customs: After landing, you will pass through immigration, where the officer will ask for your passport, DS-2019 form, and J-1 visa. They will also take your photograph and fingerprints. You can later view your I-94 online at the DHS I-94 portal.

  • Baggage claim and customs: After immigration, proceed to baggage claim to collect your luggage. You will then pass through customs, where the official will ask for your declaration form (6059B) and inquire about items you have brought with you. Make sure to declare all items and be prepared to pay duty on certain items.

Travel Tips from U.S. Customs and Border Protection

  • Keep documents with you: Always carry your passport and visa materials on your person. Never pack them.

  • Declare food products: Remember to declare any food items you bring with you into the U.S.

  • Declare purchased items: Declare anything you have purchased abroad that is not for personal use. Duty-free goods must also be declared, even if purchased in a duty-free store.

  • Check restricted items: Ensure the items you bring into the U.S. are allowed. There are specific restrictions on fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, live plants, animals, trademarked goods, and animal trophies.

  • For more information, visit U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Transportation From The Airport

  • Plan your route: Research transportation options before arriving. Check with your host organization and airport website for the best way to get to your final destination. Transit agencies often publish schedules, maps, and fares online. Be sure to check for any arrangements.
